The Bronze Bow
By Elizabeth George Speare
see relatedSO, how's school going for all of you? Please write and let us all know what's working and what's not!
Jacob, Ethan, and Grace are doing really well. I'm finally buckling down and being strict about them finishing all their day's work. So often, in the past, I would say, "oh well, Grace didn't get to math today." and after a while we would be hopelessly behind.
Now, at the beginning of the week, I make 3 copies of our week's schedule. They write their name on top, and they each cross off what they get done as they go along. I'm so thankful that they are independent workers. I am here with them, but I don't have to help very much....I just answer the occasional question (like, "How do you make a cursive "R" again?") I do read and explain new things at times, too.
We have verses to memorize from Romans so I printed them out in large font and taped them to the wall.
I also hung up an Abraham Lincoln poster that I bought this summer.
David goes to public school, but I'm taking the time each morning, as we wait for the bus, to read some Scripture to him. Oh how I love those times, just the two of us.
For read-aloud time we are working on The Bronze Bow. However, I don't have time to sit and read aloud (there are too many distractions) so I bought the book for my ipod. The children all enjoy listening to the story.
We've been checking out beautiful art books from the library, along with history books (Jacob read one about 9/11 during that week this month). I've been taking Honey for a Child's Heart with me to the library, to find good, well-written books for them. Of course I also allow some "fluff" books as well, for fun.
I come across quotes quite often, about education, so I am going to try to be better at sharing them on here.
Does anyone need any A Beka math things?

I remember reading ""A bronze Bow" and really loving it!
Our first week of school was. . .productive; our second week of school was. . .put on hold due to illness. We all caught the flu and spent the week trying to recover. On the mend now, but still not 100%, trying to get back to work. I fiddled with the schedules this morning and got that all reorganized. We have boxes of new books for the year. I'm hopeful this year will be more productive than most. Keep dreaming right?
I like the idea of making copies of the schedule. I have had our schedule out with the books, but it seems I refer to it more than he does. Maybe his own copy would be a good idea. I know what you mean about keeping to the schedule and not letting things slide. Since I was gone on a long weekend last week, and David was gone on a long weekend this week, we purposely had to tweek the schedule and let some things go. But now I need to get back to doing it all! I love to see him reading, but I will probably have to curtail some of his pleasure reading. I notice he lets his schoolwork reading slide when he is into a great book. He is doing well with being more responsible and doing work on his own. I value that as we only have a couple years before it is all up to him.
David is memorizing a Psalm right now. I think printing that out would be valuable, and also having him write it out. Writing things is such an aid to memory. He has been reading it and saying it thus far. I love that you are reading scripture and having such sweet times with Davey as you wait for the bus. My David is doing a lot of his Bible work on his own this year, but I would like to fit in those times together. They are so meaningful.
I have been studying Revelation. We are going through it on Sunday with the Youth. It is more difficult to teach, but very exciting. On Sunday morning I was so joyous when I heard them singing a song with the words from Rev. 4 that we had just studied the week before. God is so good! I need to study Chemistry today!
Oh, do you belong to HSLDA? I received emails over the weekend to pray. They were having a leadership meeting in Colorado. Senior counsel Chris Klicka who has MS took a turn for the worse. He is in the hospital with pneumonia and a bladder infection. The family that wasn't already there (he has 7 children), and his pastor, have all flown in as they think he may not live long. Please pray for Him and the family. Also Mike Farris was summoned home as his wife Vickie, who suffers from a medical condition with severe pain, was suffering and needed him. Please pray for these families and all the other leaders who work to maintain our freedom to homeschool and raise our children.
Oh no, I just read that above comment and am deeply concerned for the Klickas and the Farris families. I will be praying!!!
Well, not much going on in our "homeschool" these days.
Or maybe I've got that wrong...I read somewhere that a child learns so much in the first two years of life, so I guess Lee is definitely in a homeschool of sorts.
I guess you could say that for math, I am always counting things out for him ("1-2-3 crackers!"), and I certainly do reading and vocabulary words with him each day.
We also talk about colors a lot, oh, and then I suppose you could say we have a good P.E. program too. Independent learning? Not so much, yet. I am looking forward to more of that in the future, though.
Have a great week! (glad Rich is back home
)
We've been going strong for about a month because I'm going to take some time off in October when the baby arrives. I'm learning not to do so much that my son is still interested with school and wants to learn new things (we're using Abeka). The other day he wanted to learn about hummingbirds and lizards so we made time for that.
Today we had a good schooling day, we made play-doh and my younger two boys got to play with it while I finished some schooling with my oldest. Do you have any suggestions or ideas of ways to entertain younger siblings while I homeschool my oldest?
We have our ups and downs, but so far today we have done a health lesson about bacteria and food safety (Jacob has since been walking around saying "bacteria" over and over), Bible reading and discussion, math, Spanish, typing, grammar, and independent reading (Beth and Rachel are reading biographies of kings and queens). Still need to do a reading lesson with Bekah, and some history and science this afternoon. At the moment, Jake and Sarah are playing play-doh at the kitchen table, but they are soon off to nap time!
Quite frankly, most days I feel completely overwhelmed and inadequate. I feel like I barely make it through the day by the seat of my pants.
I use A Beka. What grade, and how current, are the books you want to sell?
I'm training my girls to read lesson assignments, after I've taught them a new concept. They are still young, but they are learning to work independently, too. Makes our job easier, doesn't it?!
